NORMAL Inc. SHAPE programs with the proper support, youth and their families experiencing hunger can become contributing participants in the community, if we develop strategies to address hunger in our respective communities. In partnership with public, private and faith-based organizations, we’re committed to providing solutions for preventing hunger by providing basic needs and services for youth and their families at risk of hunger, increasing access to temporary services for individuals experiencing hunger by, developing and strengthening broader community support to end hunger.
The economic conditions have put more individuals and families into distress than at any other time in recent history, with ever-dwindling resources. Many agencies are seeing an increase in families requesting assistance, with most of those requests coming from individuals and families who previously never needed help.
Children in school receive breakfast or lunch at school and to many this is their evening meal. SHAPE has a Power Pack program that distributes up to 250 backpacks to elementary age students a week. Despite increases in donations to food banks, there is still a significant disparity between supply and demand and SHAPE programs hope to bridge the gap. The recently released data by the federal government indicates the problem is getting worse and until this economy turns we will continue to experience the increase of families in need of assistance.
The hope of any programs such as this surviving lies in the hands of the communty and its citizens willingness to help each other.
